Who this is for

People who want document-led, detail-driven work with global demand and a clear certification route.

Students who want to help foreign individuals obtain and maintain a US tax identification number.

Why this work exists

Millions of people outside the United States need a U.S. tax number before they can be paid by a platform, claim a treaty rate, take up a scholarship or invest. The paperwork is unforgiving and the demand is constant.

Your career journey

This pathway moves you from understanding how the U.S. tax system works to identification-case curriculum. Running live identification cases for real clients is not currently operating. Here is what that career looks like, stage by stage.

  1. Stage 1 · Start — understand the system

You can explain how the U.S. tax system works, who needs a tax number, and how to handle client records and confidentiality properly.

Study stage — no client work yet.

Foundation-ready and cleared for client-facing training.

  2. Stage 2 · Supervised-practice training — application support

You can assess whether someone qualifies for a U.S. tax number and prepare their application under supervision.

Supervised case-fee work is not currently operating and is not guaranteed. If later offered, work would be assigned as available and volume is not guaranteed.

Supervised-practice training for casework — live paid client work is not currently operating.

  3. Stage 3 · Certified support — identity verification

You can review identity documents and support the certifying process, so clients never have to mail original passports.

Higher per-case supervised work is not currently operating. If later offered as certification cases open, volume is not guaranteed.

    Trusted on certification-grade casework.

  4. Stage 4 · Specialist credential — where next

You can carry a complete identification case from first contact to issued number, and review the work of others starting out.

Full specialist case work and recurring renewal seasons are not currently operating. If later offered, volume is not guaranteed.

ITIN Specialist — ready to add a withholding or expat specialism.

What you will be able to do

  • Assess whether someone qualifies for a U.S. tax number, including the exception routes
  • Prepare a complete application package that survives first review
  • Verify identity documents to certifying standard
  • Manage renewals and dependent applications across a returning client base

Career outcome examples

The examples below are illustrative composites written to show the shape of the work at each level. They are not testimonials from named students, and they do not represent a promise of work, income or results.

Illustrative — career changer, first year

Came in from an administrative background with no tax experience.

After the foundation stage and application training, took supervised application cases during a renewal season, with each case reviewed before submission.

Illustrative — multilingual practitioner

Fluent in a second language with a community of non-resident clients around them.

Used language skills to handle intake and document collection, then progressed into certification-grade casework.

The client work you support

  1. 01Foundation
  2. 02Client service basics — Client intake, Document identification
  3. 03Identification fundamentals — ITIN eligibility assessment, W-7 preparation support
  4. 04Documents and certification — Identity document review, CAA workflow support
  5. 05Practical assessment

Working life

Work follows a known seasonal rhythm — busier in application and renewal windows, lighter between them — and is done entirely from a laptop.

Where you can go next

W-8 and Withholding Specialist

Prepare and review the W-8 family, apply treaty claims and coordinate with withholding agents.

US Expat Specialist

Support expat returns, foreign income relief and offshore disclosure work under review.

Completing training demonstrates course competency. Readiness for supervised practice is not currently operating as a student offering. It is not a licence or IRS authority, and additional registration or professional authority may be required for some services. Paid work, if later offered, would be assigned as available. It is not currently operating; volume, income and results are not guaranteed.
